The building at Carrer de Vilafranca 7 does not look like an office and has never pretended to. It is a six-storey former factory that stood empty for more than twenty-five years before it was rehabilitated in 2012 and opened to its first members in January 2013, and the conversion left the evidence in place: vaulted ceilings over the open floors, columns where the factory put them rather than where a space planner would, a two-storey painted face on the wall of the event hall, and a cafeteria on the ground floor with a long communal table that fills at lunchtime whether or not anyone organised it. Two thousand square metres spread over six levels means the house is vertical rather than sprawling, and you learn it floor by floor.

The flexible working areas sit on floors one, two, three and five, which is also where the private offices are, so members and teams share the same staircases and the same coffee rather than being sorted into separate wings. Five meeting rooms are distributed through the building, seating three, six, eight, eight and twelve, each with a screen and a whiteboard, and the largest of them doubles as the room teams book when a video call needs more than a laptop. The event hall occupies the ground floor beside the café, which is why an evening talk here spills into a drink instead of ending in a lobby.

Two features do more work than anything else on a normal day. The first is the twenty video-call booths, an unusually high number for a house this size and the reason the open floors stay quiet: a call is somewhere to go rather than something everyone else has to sit through. The second is the six terraces, cut into the roofline and the setbacks of a dense Gràcia block, planted, furnished with wooden tables and low sofas, and used as genuine working surfaces rather than smoking corners. In a city where a workspace with outdoor space is the exception, this is the single thing most likely to decide whether you take the tour or not.

How you buy matters as much as what you get, and this is where the building is unusually accommodating. A day pass gets you in between nine and six with no reservation at all. Hour packs are the house speciality and the reason people who are in the office part of the week end up here: six of them, from twenty-five hours to a hundred and fifty, with a month or a full quarter to spend them and entry any weekday between eight and eight. If you are here most days, the flexible monthly desk lets you take any free seat on the open floors, and a dedicated desk is yours to leave a monitor on. Those two memberships are the ones that carry round-the-clock access, and the dedicated desk adds five hours of meeting rooms a month, a locker, a registered business address and thirty prints. Current rates for all of them sit in the plan list on this page.

For teams, nine private offices are published, ranging from sixteen square metres for three or four people up to eighty for twenty, several with their own phone booths and their own meeting room behind the office door. They are let with no minimum term, no bank guarantee and no deposit, at a stated minimum of four square metres per person, and the operator says a team can add a fifth more people without paying more — the clause that decides whether an office survives a hiring round. Prices are not published for any of them, nor for the meeting rooms, nor for the event hall, which offers nine layouts from a twenty-person meeting to ninety-person networking with projector, sound, microphones, movable furniture and a person on site included.

Gràcia earns the address a mention of its own. It was a separate town until the late nineteenth century and still refuses the Eixample's grid: narrow streets, small squares with terraces on them, independent shops and a level of street life that a business district does not have at four in the afternoon. Joanic on line four and Lesseps on line three are both roughly ten minutes on foot, Park Güell is up the hill, and lunch is a decision between fifty places rather than a canteen. It is the kind of address that makes a workday feel less like commuting to an office park and more like belonging to a neighbourhood, which is precisely what a house with six terraces in the middle of it is for.
