# La Manual

La Manual occupies a street-level unit at Calle de Zurita 43, in the middle of Lavapiés, and its front is painted: the door leaves and the flanks carry a colour mural, and the sign reads La Manual, coworking creativo. Behind it are two hundred square metres on the ground floor, laid out as one long room in which exposed concrete columns set the rhythm instead of partitions. Light comes in from the shopfront and from the patio at the back, and the walls carry screen prints, posters and framed illustration that change over time — not catalogue decoration, but work by the people who sit here.

The main room is pale wood desks and task chairs, plants on nearly every surface, and an acoustic that is deliberately calm. There is a computer area, with screens and green desk lamps over the tables, for the long day in front of a monitor; a rest corner with a sofa, a low table and the two large copiers; and a dining area with a kitchen, a long shared table and a yellow upholstered bench where half the room converges at lunchtime. Beside the stairs sits a glazed booth for calls, exactly the size of one chair and a laptop.

The patio at the back is the part you cannot see from the street and the part that changes the day: an interior courtyard with climbers going up the brick, big pots and a red bistro table, which is where the mid-morning coffee happens when the weather allows. The workshop, on the other side, is the other oddity of the house — pine shelving, a metal cabinet and a long worktop against the planted wall — and it is where the offer of a five-square-metre space of your own inside the ceramics room comes from.

Desks are sold by how you work rather than by the metre. The flex desk has no assigned table and goes first come first served, on a weekday window covering morning and afternoon, with a half-day variant and an afternoon-shift variant for people who split the day. The fixed desk is a large table of a hundred and fifty by seventy-five centimetres that is only ever yours, with a drawer unit, an ergonomic chair, a locker and the option of extra shelving, and with access to the space twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week: you can leave the computer or the monitor set up and come back on Monday. For someone passing through there is a day pass and a half-day pass, and a ten-day bundle valid for a month.

What is let here is desks, and it is worth knowing that no meeting room goes by the hour: the house is built as one shared room rather than as a floor of bookable boxes. The glazed booth by the stairs takes the client call, the patio takes the conversation that wants some air, and the long table in the dining area is where the whole room eats together at midday.

The neighbourhood does the rest. Lavapiés is the piece of the Centro district where Madrid has been mixing for a century, and today it is where a good share of the city's illustration, design and small-press work gets done: La Casa Encendida a step away, the Reina Sofía and the Tabacalera in the short radius, and a density of bars, shops and workshops that makes going out for lunch something other than an errand. The house publishes its own distances: two minutes to Lavapiés Metro, ten on foot to Sol, fifteen to Atocha.

The community is part of the product and it is organised: events, wine tastings, book and plant swaps, pincho competitions. And yet the operator insists, rightly, that the working atmosphere is one of respectful quiet rather than of a café. It suits illustrators, designers, translators, product people and anyone working for themselves who wants neighbours to eat with and needs, for the rest of the day, nobody to talk to them.
