# Regus Leuchtenfabrik

Long before Regus moved in, this address on Edisonstrasse made light for the whole of Europe. The building complex began life as the Lampenfabrik R. Frister, raised in stages between 1897, when the first wing went up along what is now Wilhelminenhofstrasse, and 1916, when a second wing was completed facing the Spree river. By 1920 the factory employed around 900 workers producing chandeliers, candelabras, table lamps and electric cooking appliances, making it — for a time — the largest lighting-fixture manufacturer in Europe. The company's stock corporation collapsed in the economic crash of 1933, and the building went on to several further industrial lives: first under Wärmegeräte GmbH, then, after 1952, as VEB Funkwerk Köpenick, one of East Germany's state electronics combines, before passing in 1963 to the Institute for Communications Technology.

That layered history is still legible in the architecture today. The older section, on the corner of Wilhelminenhofstrasse and Edisonstrasse, carries neo-Gothic facades from the turn of the twentieth century, while the younger Spree-facing wing takes a plainer, more functional approach, anchored by a distinctive stairwell tower. The whole complex is protected under Berlin's heritage conservation rules as a listed monument, and its current mix of tenants — doctors' practices, a music school, a dance school, postal services, artists' studios, restaurateurs and office occupiers including this Regus centre — shows how thoroughly Oberschöneweide has repurposed its industrial stock rather than replacing it.

Inside, Regus Leuchtenfabrik offers private offices from €399 a month. A shared lounge area gives teams somewhere informal to work or take a break away from the desk, dedicated meeting rooms are available for client presentations and internal sessions, the building offers wheelchair access throughout, and on-site parking is available for anyone arriving by car rather than train or tram — a genuine convenience in a district built for industrial traffic rather than commuter rail.

The location sits within Treptow-Köpenick, Berlin's largest and greenest borough, in a corner of the city with a very specific industrial pedigree. A century ago, Oberschöneweide was nicknamed the "Elektropolis" — an early hub of Germany's electrical industry, where AEG and the Kabelwerk Oberspree cable works operated alongside the Frister lamp factory itself, together employing tens of thousands of people along the banks of the Spree. Today HTW Berlin, the city's University of Applied Sciences, runs a campus on nearby Wilhelminenhofstrasse inside further converted industrial buildings, keeping a steady flow of students and researchers through the district, and the wider Adlershof science and technology park lies within the same part of southeast Berlin, a short distance further out.

Getting to and from the centre doesn't require a car. A tram stop at Wilhelminenhofstrasse/Edisonstrasse is around two minutes on foot from the building, connecting directly into Berlin's tram network, while the S-Bahn hub at Schöneweide — served by the S8, S9, S41, S42, S45, S46 and S47 lines — is reachable via the same local tram and rail network, linking the district to central Berlin and beyond without needing to drive.

For businesses that want a workspace with a genuine backstory rather than a generic glass box, Regus Leuchtenfabrik offers exactly that: a listed former lighting factory on the Spree, repurposed for flexible modern work, in a district that has spent more than a century reinventing what it makes.
